Farm Highlight: Capay Organic

In 1976, with 20 acres of land, Kathleen Barsotti and Martin Barnes founded Capay Organic with a vision to grow produce the way nature intended it to be – organically and sustainably. Today, their legacy continues as the farm is now managed by their children, who carry on the same vision while educating the new generation.

Capay Organic is a member of the California Certified Organic Farmers Association — an organization that certifies farms committed to sustainable practices. All of the farm’s produce is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. The farm also practices healthy crop rotation, encouraging a diverse ecosystem around their fields, and efficiently uses local water sources to support the crops. 

The early days of selling organic produce were difficult for Martin and Kathleen. They quickly understood that a direct connection with consumers was necessary for the success of the farm. So, the farm started selling directly to wholesalers, farmers’ markets, restaurants, and retail stores. In 1992, Kathy took the direct connection with customers to a whole new level by starting Farm Fresh To You, a Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, delivering boxes of produce directly to homes and offices in California. Today, the farm grows more than 130 varieties of fruits and vegetables on 500 acres of certified organic land.

Capay has been recognized for working closely with local schools and food banks to provide fresh produce and nutrition education to the community. “Harvest of the Month will help to teach the next generation to value fresh produce and to connect with the farmers and land that grow their food,” said Thaddeus Barsotti, chief farmer and co-CEO.
