Before we get to the subject topic, may I suggest “Best Approaches to Workplace Wellness – Part 1: Make Healthy Snacks a Benefit“, if you haven’t read it?
In the past five years, investment in corporate wellness programs has grown tremendously —from $1 Billion in 2011 to $6.5 Billion in 2016. Yet, there is still a lot of skepticism about the value of such programs. The fact of the matter is that most employees value them and there is plenty of research that verifies the positive impact of proper nutrition at work. A 2018 survey conducted by Deloitte regarding Global Human Capital Trends reported that 63% of employees considered healthy snacks valuable when it came to wellness.
When approaching the implementation of a corporate healthy food and beverage program, it is important to start with the notion that a “one-size-fits-all” approach is unlikely to be effective to truly create change in company culture. You may need to get a little personal with your employees, keep in mind that everyone is different, and honor the diversity in your workforce. It would be wise to survey the employees. Ask questions such as:
- What is liked or disliked about current food and drink options?
- What type of healthy foods or drinks do they wish were available to align with their personal wellness goals?
- Outside of hunger, what leads them into the breakroom? Is it boredom, camaraderie, stress relief, a need for an energy boost?
- Do they have food allergies, sensitivities, or dietary restrictions?
Gaining a deeper understanding of the preferences of the people will make building a lasting wellness program more likely to succeed, as it would be tailored to the workforce. Furthermore, incorporating employees early into the process will allow them to take ownership of their own wellness and be a part of the shifting culture.
